Welcome to our daily rosary meditation. Let's begin in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Amen. Let's call to mind all those we've promised to pray for.

Hope is the virtue where the individual strives for heaven as something which is possible, but not guaranteed.

So hope involves three things.

First, an active pursuit of God in heaven.

Second, the realization that the attainment of heaven is possible.

After all, if it wasn't possible to get to heaven, why would anyone even try?

But third, a realization that failing to attain

heaven is also possible. After all, if getting to heaven was in the bag, why would you have to try?

Then there would be no need for hope. So a vigorous hope implies an awareness that

hell is a real but tragic possibility. Yet many people think it's not a good idea to bring

up the idea of hell. Some say it doesn't even exist. But Jesus was very clear that hell

does exist. Jesus spoke about it in many places, especially the sermon on the mount, where he

warned us that hell was a possibility due to unrepentant sin.

And the saints tell us about hell.

St. Faustina gives a chilling testimony of hell in her diary.

She writes, Today I was led by an angel to the chasms of hell.

It is a place of great torture.

How awesomely large and extensive it is.

Then she describes what the suffering of hell is like,
