Helen Adams Keller was born on June 27, 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama.

She was from a comfortable Southern family.

Her father, Arthur Keller, was a newspaper editor and a former Confederate Army captain.

Her family was part of the slaveholding elite before the Civil War, and she had four siblings.

At just 19 months old, Helen contracted a severe illness described by the doctors as, quote, an acute congestion

of the stomach and the brain, end quote. So it's assumed that it was either scarlet fever

or meningitis, but we actually don't know what it was. But this illness left her completely

deaf and blind. This was probably terrifying for young Helen, who was suddenly in a world of silent darkness.
