Hello everyone welcome back to the epic gardening podcast today we're going to talk about

something that is a little bit confusing for most people me included and that's

because you know I didn't come out of school with a botany degree. I am not a plant scientist and a lot of

this stuff that I've learned I've picked up through my own experience or through

reading sometimes there's gaps in your knowledge and so this question is coming

from Isaac and he wants to know the difference between different types of seeds.

And we're going to talk about open pollinated seeds, we're going to talk about heirloom seeds,

and then we're going to talk about hybrid seeds.

And so the choice that you face as a gardener

is going to be between do I go with an open-pollinated seed,

hybrid or an heirloom?

Why would I do, why would I choose one over the other?

So that's what we're going to get into today.

So open pollination.

Let's talk about that first.

Like its name implies, that is a situation

in which pollination occurs by natural systems.

So insects, birds, winds, humans, or other natural mechanisms.

And so there are no restrictions being a natural way of pollinating on the flow of pollen between individuals.

So open pollinated plants are much more genetically diverse, which means that there's

a lot of variation from plant to plant and that is a good

thing because that allows plants to adapt to their local growing conditions
