I'm Esther Ogola in Kenya for Hat and Soul, which explores personal approaches to spirituality from around the world.

It's a Sunday and I'm in the car on my way to church and I know all over Kenya people are doing the same.

Like most people in this country I'm a

Christian but this week it's not my normal church that I'm attending. I'm going

to a congregation where they are doing things radically different.

In this episode, a spiritual sanctuary and a threat.

I'm meeting the leaders of what might be Kenya's fast, openly

queer affirming church as they contemplate new challenges to their existence.

For safety reasons, I can't tell you what this church is called or even where it is.

So in this episode, I'll refer to it as the Pride Church. What I can't tell you is that almost

everyone here is LGBT Q which means most mainstream churches here in Kenya

would reject form.

B mainstream churches say being queer is an abomination.

Every time I went to church I just had to like fear this homophobic rhetoric from people

and it was so hateful at the same time they're calling themselves Christians.

Kenya is a socially conservative country and growing up have seen queer folk
