Summary

This week on Unorthodox, we’re giving you a taste of some other podcasts we’ve been working on. First, you’ll hear an episode of Liel’s daily Daf Yomi podcast, Take One, featuring special guest Sister Helen Prejean, a passionate advocate against capital punishment, as they discuss a page of Talmud that references the death penalty. Next, you’ll hear Stephanie’s interview with Tablet’s newest podcast hosts, Aimee Friedman and Lisa Sandell, about their show Anxiously. Each week Lisa and Aimee grapple with one of their anxieties—from the trivial to the existential—in a humorous and heartfelt way, helped along by smart and entertaining guests who offer perspective and advice. After the interview you’ll hear the pilot episode of Anxiously, and you can listen to the second and third episode as well. Subscribe to Anxiously and Take One wherever you listen to podcasts, and please consider rating and reviewing both shows (and Unorthodox!) on iTunes. We’re getting our Jewish Name of the Year bracket ready for March Madness! Do you have a great Jewish name or know someone with a great Jewish name? Email suggestions to unorthodox@tabletmag.com. This is on orthodox. The universe is leading Jewish podcast. I am one of your hosts, Stephanie

Bunnick, and I'm here with one of your other hosts, Liel Liebowitz.

0:14.0

I think we're alone now. There doesn't seem to be Mark Oppenheimer around.

0:20.0

So we've given Dad the week off, and we are here to tell you about some really fun things

0:25.0

that we have been working on, behind the scenes, from our closets, from our basements, from our addicts, over the pandemic.

0:32.0

We have some new shows, and we want to tell you all about them today.

0:36.0

Well, you have been binging on the Queen's Gambit. We have been producing podcasts for you to binge on.

0:40.0

Before we get to any new shows, Liel, give us a take one update.

0:44.0

So one of the most charming traditions in Jewish life is this thing called Daffyomi,

0:49.0

which literally means a page a day. It's a tradition of reading just one page of the Talmud a day,

0:55.0

finishing the whole cycle in a convenient seven and a half year stretch.

0:59.0

Last January was the completion of the cycle, and something like 95,000 people gathered in giant stadium

1:06.0

back when you could still gather in stadiums to celebrate this accomplishment of having read the entire Talmud together one page at a time.

1:14.0

And so I'm watching this, and I've always had a curiosity about Daffyomi and love reading and studying Talmud.

1:22.0

And so I called our friend and producer Josh Cross and said, hey, you know, kind of a good thing.

1:28.0

One day we should have a Talmud podcast, and Josh said, well, why not start one when the next Daffyomi cycle starts?

1:34.0

And I said, well, because it's Thursday now, and the next cycle starts on Monday.

1:39.0

You're like, I was thinking we could have a seven year lead time.

1:41.0

Correct.

1:42.0

And shaking a seven and a half year old commitment with a day's notice to produce it isn't the most prudent thing.

1:48.0

And Josh said, you know, we'll figure it out as we go along. That's how we always do things.

1:52.0

And so here we are. We launched last January, and the idea behind the show is very, very simple.
