Summary

On today’s episode of Hear Me Out… main character syndrome. As concerts and movie theaters have roared back to life this summer, so has a disturbing trend: bad behavior. You’ve seen the videos, probably — picking fights with neighbors, throwing things onstage, and taking videos during Barbie. Some of these behaviors have higher stakes than others, obviously. But it’s clear that we’re in a new frontier of public behavior… and that it might be more difficult, and more dangerous, to chide our neighbors. Freelance writer Sara Stewart joins us to argue that times have changed… and it’s time for venues to step up. This is Hear Me Out. I'm your host Celeste Headley. Massive cultural events are having

a major comeback this summer. After years of pandemic restrictions, concerts and movie

theaters are roaring back to profitability and importance. But what that means is that

0:17.2

this summer it's been hard to avoid stories of people behaving badly, throwing things

with other attendees that sometimes turn violent. Some of this isn't new, of course. But

0:34.6

we can all probably agree that things have gotten kind of bad. So the question becomes,

0:40.8

what do we do now? Does it come down to choosing an absolute

0:44.9

freedom for all to behave however they like and this sort of police state? I have to say,

0:51.5

I really think there's a middle of brown.

0:54.1

And Sarah Stewart joins us to say, we can't force each other to behave better, so it's

0:59.2

time for organizers to step up and stay with us.

You're listening to a recording of Adele, the singer songwriter addressing a recent

audience about a disturbing new trend in concert going. A month ago, pop star Beebe Rexha

1:54.9

took a cell phone to the face while she was performing and walked away with a black

1:59.6

eye and three stitches. As Rexha made her way down the stage, a concert

2:03.7

goer threw a cell phone from the audience hitting her in the face. You can see in the video,

Rexha falling to her knees, crew members rushing in to help the man who threw that cell phone
