Here's your closing bell brief for Thursday, October 16th. I'm Catherine Sullivan for the Wall Street Journal.

U.S. stocks fell today, with the Dow Jones Industrial average

dropping about 300 points, or nearly 0.7%.

The S&P 500 was down 0.6%, and the NASDAQ slid 0.5%.

New worries about the health of regional banks weighed on the market,

sending the KBW NASDAQ regional banking index down 6.3%. The concern sent some investors to the

bond market, pushing the benchmark 10-year treasury yield to its lowest level since October 24.

Chip stocks climbed after Taiwan's semiconductor manufacturing reported record profits,

highlighting demand for processors that power artificial intelligence systems.

Among individual companies, shares of Salesforce climbed about 4%

after the software company said it expects to grow revenue at a double-digit percentage rate in the coming years.

Jeffrey's stock fell almost 11% as the investment bank held an investor day amid questions about its ties to a collapsed auto parts supplier.

Nestle shares gained more than 9% after the Swiss company announced plans to reduce costs by cutting 16,000 jobs.

And shares of J.B. Hunt Transport Services surged 22% after the logistics company reported
