Summary

In this episode, Jake and Bob host Brett Powell on the podcast. Brett is co-host with Jake on Way of the Heart Podcast, a conversion for men about journeying through life with a heart fully alive. Brett has extensive experience in leadership within the church and a passion for men’s ministry and fatherhood. Brett gets real about the heart of leadership: relationship with others and relationship with God, and why our relationships at home matter more than anything else as leaders. Thank you, Brett, for the gentle reminder to re-evaluate what we’re prioritizing in light of what’s most important!

Quote:

We are not the sum of our weaknesses and failures, we are the sum of the Father's love for us and our real capacity to become the image of His Son Jesus. - St. John Paul II

Key points:

  • Work is an easy place to go for affirmation, but parenthood is where our true selves show
  • How leadership manifests in fatherhood
  • How performance orientation can get in the way of unconditional love
  • What does ‘freedom to fail’ mean and look like?
  • The importance of desiring good for the people you lead
  • The heart multiplies itself into the people it leads
  • The yoke of Christ vs the yoke we put on others
  • The impact of shame and an unhealed heart in leadership
  • Why prioritizing relationships in the home matters more than anything else
  • The currency of trust is foundational in organizations

Practical Application:

  1. Assess: where are you currently putting your resources either in your business or your family life? What does this communicate about your priorities?
  2. Read Fr. Jacques Philippe’s article on Fatherhood (below in the shownotes).
  3. Choose to do one thing this week to build trust in a family relationship, work relationship and/or a friendship.
  4. Take time to reflect on where you might be living out of a performance orientation. How might this be affecting your relationships and what’s one thing you can do this week to work on that?
