| 0:52.0 | Thomas Elkins, a brilliant inventor, realized there was a better way. |
| 0:59.0 | Elkins patented an apparatus to preserve foods for an extended period, using chilled metal coils inside an insulated container. |
| 1:09.0 | Food stayed fresh way longer. |
| 1:12.0 | But Elkins, who was also an abolitionist, knew his invention meant something even more significant for our people. |
| 1:21.0 | His patented technology was critical for our community. |
| 1:25.0 | Elkins was a part of committees across the north, established to protect self-neverated black folks from re-inslavement. |
| 1:34.0 | His design directly ate it in helping feed many of our people while they fought to keep their freedom. |
| 1:42.0 | Elkins' vigilance committee housed free black folks, often providing them with legal assistance, shelter, clothing, and most importantly, food. |
| 1:53.0 | He even helped support the work of the Underground Railroad. |
| 1:58.0 | Elkins' innovation was about more than his inventions. |
| 2:02.0 | It was about liberating our people using his skills and talents. |
| 2:07.0 | With his critical contribution to black lives in the 1800s and today, his legacy can't be ignored. |
| 2:15.0 | We think that's pretty cool. |
| 2:17.0 | In order to move towards the future, you've got to look to the past. |
