I was exploring a vast, desolate stretch of the desert in New Mexico last year with a group of friends.

We were set up in a primitive area, six of us in our early 20s, plus my older brother, who's in his late 40s, and has spent half his life doing deep country survey work. We were miles from the nearest paved road, camped out near a series of ancient
