He couldn't remember exactly when his sister started talking about it, only that once it began, it never really stopped.

At first it came up casually. A comment here or there about something strange in the house.

Nothing dramatic, nothing she lingered on too long. A door that didn't stay shut.

Footsteps on the stairs when she was alone, something small being moved,

and turning up somewhere else later. The kind of things that could easily be brushed off

if you didn't give them too much attention. He never did. From the beginning, he treated it like

exactly what it sounded like. An old house doing what old houses do. Things shift, things settle,

sounds carry in ways you don't expect. He had an explanation for everything, and if he didn't have

one right away, he would come up with something close enough that it didn't matter. She didn't

argue with him much about it. That was part of what made it easier to dismiss. She would just

look at him, half amused, half frustrated, and insist that it wasn't what he thought, that it wasn't

just the house or the pipes or the neighbors, that it was something else. He always smiled when she said that, not in a way that was

meant to shut her down, just the kind of smile that said he had already made up his mind. That had

always been how it worked between them. She would tell him something that had happened, and he would

immediately start picking it apart, offering explanations.

Before she even finished the story, sometimes he'd lean into it just to get a reaction,

asking if the ghost had moved anything important this time, or if it was just sticking to doors and footsteps.

She would roll her eyes, tell him he wasn't funny, and then continue explaining why she knew what she had heard or seen wasn't normal.

He never pushed back hard.
