Summary

In the days since President Donald Trump ordered the killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani, the presidents's spokespeople have taken to the airwaves to claim that we are safer with the Iranian who had the death of hundreds of Americans on his hands gone. But so far, things don't feel safer. The Iranian government--which has a global network of proxies at its disposal--promised revenge. It vowed to enrich uranium beyond limits set by the agreement struck during then Obama Administration. The Iraqi parliament voted to expel U.S. troops from that country and the U.S announced the beginning of its withdrawal. Oil prices moved upward. Russia, Iran, and ISIS stood poised to benefit from declining U.S. influence. To some, another Mideast war seemed inevitable. But is it? Will Iran prove to be the rational actor who calms then situation? Will Trump blink and actually seek the de-escalation his Secretary of State promised? Will divisions in the national security establishment have an impact? 1:20.8	Now when we recorded this episode, which was on Monday afternoon on January 6th, there was a story that the United States Army or the United States military had announced that it was going to depart Iraq.
1:37.0	And it was a story that had been confirmed by AFP, by Reuters, by the Washington Post.
1:44.9	And so we talked about it a little bit.
1:46.6	And then shortly after we finished the episode,
1:49.8	the Secretary of Defense had a little meeting with the press and he said, oh, there's been no decision
1:55.1	made to pull out of Iraq and the Chairman the Joint Chiefs of Staff said, yeah, that was a draft letter and it wasn't approved and the language wasn't any good.
2:07.6	And so what seemed to be a fairly momentous decision seemed to be undone.
2:14.4	Of course, none of what they said addressed the fact
2:17.4	that the Iranian parliament had earlier voted
2:21.0	to expel US troops from Iraq.
