0:05.7	Of the many pieces of advice or commencement speaker might impart,
0:09.4	I think the most important one is this.
0:12.1	Stay connected to reality.
0:14.4	This is a more difficult task than you might think.
0:17.6	Reality can be deeply painful,
0:19.7	and there will be many temptations to run from it.
0:22.8	When I was growing up in Africa and the Middle East, I lived in uncertain and often dangerous
0:27.6	circumstances. Hardship was universal. My life and the lives of everyone I knew were touched
0:34.1	by war, poverty, disease, famine, and disorder.
0:38.5	Our reality was brutal.
0:41.3	The temptation we all faced was to run from that reality,
0:45.0	to give away our minds to strong men, false prophets, and radical ideologies.
0:50.9	We were encouraged to channel the pain of our reality into tribal and religious enmities.
0:57.0	But these were just coping mechanisms, ways to run from a reality that felt hopelessly difficult.
1:04.5	Ironically, you face the same challenge, running from reality, but from the totally opposite perspective.
1:12.5	Whereas my life was surrounded by chaos, your life is surrounded by comfort.
1:17.9	For you, real poverty is virtually non-existent.
1:22.1	Physical danger is barely a concern, but you're not free from psychological danger,
1:26.9	and this can also be perilous.
1:29.5	Bordom and anxiety are your enemies. As you struggle to find your purpose in life, something we all
1:35.4	must do, you will be tempted not to run from your reality as I was, but to go to war with it,
