In my book, I document this early moment in the White House during the transition between the Obama and the Trump administration,

where Obama's Homeland Security Advisor was organizing this disaster exercise for the Trump transition team.

And she was going over several crises, several deadly disasters, one of which was a pandemic.

And Miller's predecessor, Cecilia Munoz, she was sitting right next to Miller, and she noticed that he was, you know, pecking away at his phone the whole time,

and she felt like he wasn't paying attention, and you know, she's not a big fan of the Trump administration, but she wanted them to know what to do in the event of a deadly crisis.

So she turned to Stephen Miller, and she asked him, is there anything that I can help you with? And he responded immediately, yes.

And I'm paraphrasing, but essentially his words were, I want to know, how do I make sure that I'm the one pulling the strings on immigration policy?

How do I make sure that national security experts are not interfering with what I want to do on immigration?

And that's how he ended up approaching his position over the course of his time at the White House.
