We'd like to think that in these modern times, that hate crimes would be on the down swing.

Aren't people more evolved when it comes to social attitudes than people were in 1926?

That is true for most of us, but bigotry still exists, and among some segments of the population,

the people who carry out hate crimes have become emboldened by figures in the media and in politics,

who try to justify what they do and how they think. Sometimes the crimes are as

lightweight as graffiti expressing diatribes toward a particular demographic, and on other occasions

it is carried out to the extreme of murdering people for their affiliation,

sometimes to the point of murdering large groups.

It's a worldwide phenomenon with many world leaders saber-rattling at other countries

because of assumed superiority or real or imagined injustices.

In some cases, the victims of historical hate crimes have not received the apologes and

atonements to which their nation's people are entitled.

Maybe bigotry will never go away, or perhaps it will take another century for it to be filtered out.

One factor in the third world that sustains prejudicial thought is the high rates of illiteracy. In that kind of circumstance, ignorance proliferates

and festers in the absence of truth. It's that kind of environment in which young men are recruited

into terrorist groups. Terrorists are motivated by prejudice, after all.
