global push to introduce a four-day working week. Unilever in New Zealand has become the latest

firm to launch a year-long trial. We know from all of the businesses that are doing a four-day week

around the world that they are more

productive, they have a healthier workforce. It's about having a leadership who are prepared to

take a chance. We speak to enthusiasts who say the COVID pandemic is an opportunity to reset

all our working habits and the naysayers. Some of the arguments I hear for the four-day work week

sound more like projections of personal values and personal preferences

than actually looking at what is the best science about human performance say.

On the 28th of November 1919 in Washington, the first international labor standard of the ILO was

adopted. The Hours of Work Industry Convention,001, limited working time to eight hours a day

and 48 hours a week. That clip from the International Labor

Organization celebrated its role in helping to popularize the eight-hour working day, a day that

was divided into eight hours of work, eight hours of play and eight hours of sleep.

A landmark for workers' rights, the convention has had far-reaching impact on normalising the eight-hour workday

and has been an enduring pillar of modern working life.

But has the eight-hour five-day working week had its day?

Well, Unilever in New Zealand appears to be pondering that very question.

It's trialling a four-day working week, cutting employees' hours without cutting their pay.

It even appears to have the support of New Zealand's Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardan.
