0:10.0	I'm Patrick Miller. Several years ago I remember meeting with a friend
0:16.3	named John. He'd spent his whole adult life as a public committed follower of
0:21.4	Jesus. He was a leader, the kind of guy that lots of other people look up to.
0:25.6	But internally, he was combating all sorts of sins. He felt distant from God.
0:31.0	He struggled to read his Bible and pray. He suffered from lifelong
0:34.8	addictions to pornography and nicotine. He battled to keep his alcohol consumption
0:39.4	under control. And none of this was visible to anyone.
0:43.0	Because of his leadership position, he kept most of it secret from all the people around him.
0:47.0	And that only pushed him further into the darkness, into the loneliness,
0:51.0	and deep into the thought that he'd abandoned God.
0:54.4	And that because he'd already experienced God's forgiveness and grace time and again,
0:59.1	he'd somehow squandered it time and again and by this point God had probably given up on him too.
1:06.3	And so he just went through life faking, faking all the motions of being a Christian, being
1:11.1	internally dead. It was far easier to do that than get up every day and
1:15.4	read his Bible and pray and confess all the ways he was failing and then fail again.
1:19.4	I don't think that John is alone. I think that churches are populated with people battling all sorts of addictions.
1:26.8	I think many of you listening to this are battling with addiction.
1:30.0	And if not addictions, you are battling with sins and idols that you cannot defeat.
1:35.2	And I think all of us are embarrassed.
