Today, for two years, Chinese leaders have done whatever it takes to be COVID.

But the extraordinary spread of Omicron is posing a new question.

Can China learn to live with it?

Late last year, as most of us were canceling Christmas parties and trying to find ways to get a COVID test,

most of China, people were living normal lives, including a young woman in the capital.

Well, like a lot of young people around the world, this banker, 26-year-old woman from Beijing, finished last day of her work

on the 31st of December 2021, and she was looking forward to the new year as everybody else was.

And what we know now is that in the first few days of the new year, she visited the Dio Shop

and Shopped at Walmart and also had lunch at Transduedr, which was Beijing's best known peaking

roast duck restaurant, and she also went to a stand-up comedy show, and on the weekend,

she drove with friends to a ski resort on the outskirts of the capital Beijing.

Her movements were nothing special, but soon, they'd be known across Beijing, because of what happened next.

And then at some point, she felt there was something wrong with her, so on the 13th of January,

she began to feel a bit of a sore throat. That's when things started to be a bit suspicious for her.

And on the 14th of January, the next day, she had a high fever, and then she went voluntarily

to be tested. Less than 24 hours later, China's first locally transmitted Omicron case was found in

Beijing, and she was notified via telephone that she was diagnosed with COVID.

The good news, however, is that there are no additional cases here in Beijing, and also in Shanghai,

both for political and economic capitalists here. The positive case triggered a series of events

that two years into the pandemic would be unthinkable in most of the world.
