What happened in the last 24 hours, I think, is that all the Tories loved what he said,

and all the Labour voters hated what he said.

That is most emphatic. It's not just that we need America. America is our indispensable ally.

The trouble is at the moment that Tony Blair is arguing for stuff that is passionate and may be wrong.

And Kirstama is not putting forward the stuff

that absolutely is required and may be right.

The public can like it or lump it, but this is what we're doing under all circumstances.

There is no coincidence.

That is precisely when Blair's power started to diminish.

When American presidents flirt with authoritarian leaders,

when they undermine international law,

when they embark on military adventurism,

it's really important that Britain is able to act independently

and in accordance with our own interests and values.

If we're in any doubt about that, just look back to the war in Iraq.

And what happened then when loyalty to America replaced good judgment?

That's what they call shots fired.
