Summary

Is Harvey Weinstein a rapist? Many have already made up their minds, but compelling evidence from the defense could prove otherwise. In the opening day of the trial, we hear statements from the prosecution and the defense. The prosecution argues that Harvey Weinstein is a sexual predator and a rapist. They paint a picture of a man who used his star power to abuse young women and in one case, the prosecution alleges he raped a 27-year old aspiring actress. The defense paints a much different picture. In their opening remarks, they revealed emails between Weinstein and the some of the complainants that showed friendly romantic relationships. The evidence includes texts and emails -- one of which even reads, "I love you, I always do. But I hate feeling like a booty call.”

0:21.5	It was a day of shocking evidence but not for reasons you might think.
0:25.4	First of all let's just remind you of what this case is all about. In a case that
0:30.3	basically launched the Me Too movement, the movie producer Harvey Weinstein faces two charges of rape and one of a criminal sex act.
0:37.0	He also faces two charges of predatory sexual assault which carries the most severe punishment of a possible life sentence.
0:45.4	Prosecutors will also argue Weinstein displayed a pattern of predatory behavior and
0:50.4	they'll be calling four other witnesses who they say will help prove a pattern of behavior
0:55.6	but Weinstein is not facing charges connected to those to that behavior.
1:00.4	That's right.
1:01.4	Well today's so we were in and all day today and it was I have to say a lot more dramatic than I'd even anticipated and we heard so what we heard, Philham was we heard opening statements from the prosecution
1:15.2	and then that was followed on quite quickly by opening statements from the defense.
1:20.8	The defense.
1:21.8	Yeah. The most shocking thing I think today, one of the most shocking things today was the cold weather.
1:26.8	Oh yeah.
1:27.8	So yeah, so we were there from about 10 to 5.
1:30.5	We lined up outside the court in Lower Manhattan and it was sub-zero temperatures and there were 20 people ahead of us at that stage
1:38.1	By the time that we actually you know so we actually lined up for about four hours before we got into the court and I'll tell you it got very, very cold out there.
1:46.0	So that was, yeah, that was the first shocking thing that happened.
