This has been a pretty productive squash year for me, which is usually something I wouldn't

say.

It's the first year I've had a lot of space to devote to squash.

I can just toss it in the bed, not really worry about making sure it fits perfectly.

Great feeling.

So today we're going to talk about harvesting butternut squash and storing it.

It's a really, really common squash.

One of the more popular ones out there.

Let's talk about it.

There are a few things that indicate a squash is ready for harvest.

You need to pay attention to the season.

The vine will give you an indication, and then, of course, after you harvest, there is

a drying and storage process to make sure that you give it the best shelf life, and it

doesn't rot off the vine.

Really with butternut squash, it's going to be picked in late fall or early winter.

If you planted it early this year, could be ready in early summer.

So for timing, timing really depends on when you planted it, right?

So butternut squash is about 100 to 120 days from planting to maturity.

So at least you should have a trigger in your head around the 100 day mark to start looking

and seeing how mature your squash has become.

So take a look at the stem of the squash vine.

When it's ripe, the tips of the stems will dry and start to turn brown.
