Summary

I spoke at Harvard University last week and it was an extremely humbling experience. Not everybody gets to speak at the top university in the world. Yet, leading up to my talk in Cambridge, all I could think about was the fact that I myself was a college dropout. And make no mistake about it, college dropouts are foreign to Harvard. Between Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Matt Damon and others, Harvard’s dropouts have been more successful than most other colleges' graduates. Which leads to a question that I am always asked. “Tai, should I go to college?” In the video I’ll explain how you should really approach college. And when should you get a degree versus when you should drop out, or skip it altogether.Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

landed here in Boston two in the morning. It took exactly four and a half hours

speaking at Harvard tomorrow. I don't know that they know that I'm a college dropout, but

0:10.0

hopefully that won't be an issue. People ask me a lot whether you should go to college. I mean,

0:14.8

look, college is one of those colleges kind of like having a pair of scissors is a tool.

0:24.1

You don't have a piece of paper, it won't help you. So like having a college degree is like

0:29.4

those scissors, but you got to have other stuff too. Or else it's just one part of the equation.

0:34.3

I think the main problem in the education system is actually not college. It's

0:37.5

junior high, high school, and elementary school because you got 12 years from six to 18 in that. So

0:45.5

how was the flight everybody? Okay, amazing. How about Rome? You got a room?

0:51.5

Good money, baby. Good money. Yeah, you were, did you sleep? I slept in a dough.

0:58.9

This thing is G4. These things are nice in a roomy. Got some couches there. Got some potato chips.

1:08.8

But yeah, so if you should go to college, it depends how you're going to use that degree.

1:14.6

If you're just getting a degree with no purpose and no intent, it's like walking around with

1:19.2

pair of scissors. You won't accomplish anything. It's got to be in conjunction with something else.

1:25.5

So if you're getting a college degree, if you want to become a doctor, well that makes sense because

1:29.5

legally you can't be a doctor in most countries without a college degree. If you want to learn

1:34.4

marketing, I see people going to college for marketing. I have my doubts. I see people going

1:41.9

to college for learning Spanish or something like that. I'm like just go to Mexico or Panama or

1:48.2

Argentina or Colombia or Spain if you want to learn Spanish. So you got to know when to use the

1:53.8

right tool at the right time. That's what life's all about. But again, if you want to become a

1:58.2

Spanish professor, then you probably should go to college. It was a case-by-case basis,

2:04.0

but like I said, don't do things for no reason. That's a real problem. You just ask my mom,
