Summary

Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP   Guys, get yourselves ready, this is a banger of an ep. I got to sit down with the man himself, the Sweendog. The 16 Wheeler. Sweet 16. Harry Sweeny He’s one of the strongest riders in the pelo right now. They don’t call him ‘The Truck’ for nothing.   I spoke to Harry in person over in Adelaide at this year’s Tour Down Under and picked his brains about everything from his journey into the sport, his transition from Lotto to EF Education Easypost, how his neurodiversity makes him a better bike racer, and heaps more.    Harry’s a super interesting guy. He’s a consummate professional and leaves no stone unturned in his hunt for being the best athlete he can be. Hearing Sweendog talk through how he prepares for every single race, and the level of detail with which he plans every gel, every corner, every meter of road covered really opened my eyes as to how hard he works.   Up until this point, Harry’s cut his teeth in the bunch riding as a domestique; turning himself inside out for team mates to great success - pulling guys like Ben Healy to monument podiums and the Yellow Jersey at the Tour de France. But, after a conversation with his team boss Jonathan Vaughters, Harry’s finding the confidence to ride for himself and show how strong he can be. As JV put it, ‘being 10% more of an arsehole’.   Not long after we recorded, Harry’s efforts were rewarded with an absolutely stellar podium finish at the Tour Down Under - his first World Tour GC Podium. It’s a fantastic result, and - I think - marks a real shift in focus; he knows he’s got the engine to go toe-to-toe with the big guys, and now he’s proved it out there on the road.    I loved chatting to Harry, and I hope you guys enjoy listening to one of the most hard working, enthusiastic pros out there.    Prefer to watch along? Well, good-eye everyone. This is a treat. Just a few weeks ago, I pulled Harry Swinney aside at the Tour Down Under for a chat, and I bloody love recording in person, especially with a guy like Harry, because he's a hell of a lot of fun. This is Life in the Peloton presented by Map, our major partner. And look, very exciting news on the map front,

Right, let's get straight into this episode with Harry Sweeney.

1:24.1

Harry, the Sweeney.

1:26.8

Where'd that come from?

1:44.3

I actually don't know where it came from. I think it came from maybe Caden Groves or... I don't know. I never got called Sweendog at school. It was always like just Sweeney and then I think it's a cycling thing and it's just taken off because I'll be walking down the street and someone will call me swan dog that I've never seen before.

2:35.1

And I think, like, who are you? I'm drawing to slip it into the commentary. Yeah, yeah. Oh, I think it'll go hard now. Well, I've actually heard, I've, I've, I've, I've hear that it's actually progressing now. You've got your boss, Vorders, said like you're like a, like a 16 wheeler. And I reckon it should be almost sweetened to sweet 16, Harry Sweeney, never been kissed. So just 16. Yeah, it could be. We've got, I've got Swin Dog now. I've got Big rig. I've got the truck. Yeah. Oh, the big rig. That's what you go. Yeah. Big rig and the truck has taken off a little bit. That's right. The boys make honking noises when they see me now. But yeah, it's taken off. Did you get one of those little Mac dogs on the dog? I need a little bubble on the handlebar. Mate, you love your food and you've got your own little channel going there. but what's your coffee game? We're having a cold brew now.

2:36.7

Like, what's your coffee routine?

2:38.4

I'm always interested in people's coffee routine. So I feel like it tells a lot about someone. If I don't drink coffee, that's a clear song. Yeah. But then you've got to have a, I think a particular routine. What's yours? I wake up first thing I usually have long black, and then I'll have my breakfast with my

2:54.2

long black, and then just before I go out, I'll have a double espresso.

2:57.7

No milk.

2:58.7

No, I'm not big on the milk.

3:00.0

I don't love, like, alternatives, and I always feel like a bit average with dairy milk,

3:05.1

like breathing-wise, like stomach and everything's fine, but I just feel like... You never did the alternate milks? You never did the whole, you know, soy and... I don't like it. I just like prefer to have something consistent, which is just a long black and espresso. But I like a good one. I like fruity beans and something a bit interesting, you know. Do you haven't gone filter? Maybe.
