as the party appears to be consolidating around her to become the next president.

In his first comments since dropping out of the race

Joe Biden told the same event that Democrats should embrace Ms Harris. The head of

the US Secret Service has told Congress that the assassination attempt on Donald Trump

was its most significant failure in decades.

After President Biden

After President Biden announced he was abandoning his bid for re-election,

his Vice President Comola Harris,

appears solidly on track to take his place. In the past few hours she's been

addressing supporters in Mr Biden's hometown, Wilmington in Delaware in what was her first campaign

speech for president. Before she spoke Democratic Party activists heard a

familiar voice on the telephone. If I didn't have COVID, I'd be sitting there with you, stand there with you.

I'm so proud of what you've all done.

And this COVID has been keeping me out of people's hair for the next three or four days, but I'm going to be on the road.

And I'm not going anywhere. I'm going to, it's kept me away a little bit, but you know, I want people to remember that what we have done has been incredible and we get so much more we're going to get done.
