My name is Jody Avergan.

This day, June 1st, 1863 is the eve of an attack led by none other than Harriet Tubman.

The next day, June 2nd, Tubman would lead 150 Black Union soldiers who were part of the U.S. second South Carolina

volunteers. She would lead them in a raid that would become known as the

Kumbahi River raid which liberated more than 700 enslaved people.

Tubman became the first woman to lead an attack in the Civil War.

She had of course been working to free enslaved people and shuttle them to safety

often via the Underground railroad for decades by this

point.

So here to discuss the Kumbahi River raid are as always Nickelhammer of Columbia and

Hey there.

So Kelly, I was wondering if we could start a little bit big picture

on the like myth of Harriet Tubman.

Let's see if you'll go there with me on this. But you know we've talked a bit on this show about how

MLK has been flattened by history and kind of like de-radicalized in a way and people just kind of forget

the different phases and the evolution of his work and I wonder if

there's a similar thing that has happened to Harriet Tubman of maybe some people thinking of her as a kind of like

guardian angel protector type. Yeah.
