According to a story and business insider, a woman who gave up on her passion is now all

the happier for it.

Maggie Perkins taught middle-on-high school in both Florida and Georgia, but now she works

at Costco, of all places.

She attributed the change from lunch boxes to big boxes after years of working in the

educational world to being unable to pay her bills, more importantly to being able to sleep

at night because of the stress from the job.

Her story is just one of many that described the broad disillusionment so common in education

today.

These stories come from parents and students and taxpayers and teachers, but it's also

a reminder that dream jobs can become nightmares if we become alienated from our labor.

The God-given joy of meaningful work is often, in our late modern cultural moment, sapped

by overwork, overregulation, and mission drift.

On one hand, it's a mistake to think that landing one particular job in nothing else will

bring us meaning and purpose in life.

On the other hand, we talk often as if work is a necessary evil, just a way to pay bills

until we can escape to a life of leisure.

So ours is a culture that often values rampant workaholism, striving for the next promotion,

bonus, and higher salary, to finally deliver an ever-illusive piece so that we can do nothing

more than relax, enjoy ourselves, and avoid responsibilities.
