Summary

In his eight-part series Happiness is in You, Dr. Youssef conducts a thorough study of the beatitudes and expounds on the eight superstructure steps of our relationships with Christ. In the beatitudes, Jesus shows us that happiness is not getting what we want, but being content with what we have. Happiness is not found in self-sufficiency, but in full dependence on God. Each beatitude builds on our need for God, for the very first beatitude lays the foundation for our relationship with our Savior. And as we move up the superstructure of the beatitudes, they together lead us to the deepest and richest happiness we can imagine.

0:00.0	We started this series of messages. Happiness is in you from the beatitudes. And I told you,
0:06.9	and let me repeat, that this is a superstructure. This is a step-by-step program. This is not you can
0:13.8	jump into one of those steps. Jesus was not just plucking stuff out of the air. Blessed are you,
0:19.5	and blessed are you, blessed in you.
0:21.1	No, no, no.
0:21.6	He had them totally structured in such a way that you cannot go to the second step without
0:27.7	going to the first one, and you cannot go to the third one without going through the
0:31.7	second step.
0:33.6	Why are these steps necessary?
0:36.5	Well, I'm glad to answer, because Jesus meets us where we are.
0:41.6	Because Jesus leads us one step at a time, because Jesus guides us up the letter of the Christian life one rung at a time.
0:53.8	So he began with brokenness in spirit.
0:57.0	Poverty in spirit or brokenness in spirit.
0:59.5	You have to start there.
1:01.7	Without that brokenness in spirit, we will not feel a need for God.
1:07.5	Without that brokenness in spirit, the very first step we take to come to Christ,
1:12.5	we don't feel any for Christ. And then, after being broken in spirit, you begin to recognize
1:20.8	the gravity of our sin and begin to grieve over sin and mourn over sin, and then we constantly come to him in repentance
1:29.8	over our sin. Thirdly, we saw how Jesus takes us into the third step, which is meekness.
1:38.3	And as we saw, meekness is not being a dormant, but it is having power, but it's under control. And fourthly, we saw,
1:46.8	and this is where we left it, hungering and thirsting for righteousness. Now I come to the fifth
1:55.2	of this superstructure, fifth step, the fifth rung in that ladder, where it takes us to truly
