Anyone following American professional sports since August 26, 2016,

will be familiar with the image of millionaire athletes kneeling in their stadiums or arenas

at the beginning of games when thousands of fans are standing.

The then professional football player Colin Kapernik is the man whose name will go down in history in connection with this practice.

For choosing not to stand on that date at a pre-season game when players and fans were standing for the

traditional playing of the National Anthem. That day he was sitting while his

teammates and a stadium full of fans stood. The next week and thereafter he would kneel. As he explained,

I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.

A few years later, Mr. Kappernic ventured into foreign policy.
