have some dudes on the internet lamenting about how they can't fit their smartphones into their pockets anymore, which is pretty funny, if you ask me.

Because welcome to our world, fellas. We're not the only ones who notice this. Ariana Tobin is a digital producer for Marketplace.

She dug into the history of women's pockets to figure out exactly when did this happen,

when did fashion win out over function when it comes to women carrying stuff around.

Women's pockets are small. It's not an accident of history that this happened. It's like

so deeply related to every other aspect of economy and culture.

Everything in clothing, everything in design has some series of thought behind it. And in this

case, women's fashion, there are countless academics who have studied the thought and design

behind what we wear. I'm looking at what I'm wearing today. I don't think I have a single
