Hi, this is Josh Levine. I'm Slate's sports editor and the host of Slate's sports podcast Hang Up and Listen. It's August 17th, 2016, and this is your Hangup and Listen Olympics Extra. On Tuesday night in Rio, Carrie Walsh Jennings and April Ross lost to Brazil's Agatha and Barbara in straight sets and the beach volleyball semis.

Walsh Jennings, a three-time gold medalist, called her performance unacceptable and inexcusable,

though her all-time Olympic record of 26 and 1 is still not bad.

After beating the U.S. on penalty kicks in the quarterfinals, the Swedish

women's soccer team did it again, knocking out the homestanding Brazilians. After a zero-zero

draw and regulation, they did it on penalties. The Swedes, which lost to Brazil five to one

in group play, were outshot 33 to 6, but their defensive-minded put everyone

behind the ball approach worked again. After the quarter-final, American goalkeeper

Hope Solo called Sweden Cowards. After Tuesday's match, Sweden's goalkeeper, Hedvig Lindahl,

said the toughest opponent, she called it her enemy was the hot Brazilian sun, which is

extremely painful because she suffers from Vidaligo, a lack of pigmentation in the skin.

And in boxing, Ireland's Mick Conlon lost a decision to Russia's Vladimir Nicotine

in the men's 56-kilogram bantamweight division.

In a post-fight interview with Irish television, Conlon expressed his feelings about ABA, the International Boxing Association. You have a lot to get off your chest after that. Yeah, A-Bare cheats. They're fucking cheats. That's me. I never box for A-A-A-again. They're cheating bastards, they're paying everybody. And I don't go, I don't give a fucking cursing on TV and retaining this here. I say it wouldn't be gold. My dream's been shattered now. But you know what? I have a big career ahead of me. And these things, they're known for being cheats, and there'll always be cheats. Amateur boxing stinks from the core right there at the top.

And Rio and every Olympics prior, ringside observers agreed with Conlon that the judge's decision in

his fight was extremely suspicious. On Wednesday, the Associated Press reported that Aba,

aka the cheating bastards, had removed an undisclosed number of referees and judges from the Olympics.
