I just got an intriguing email from a source.

The subject line is vague. It asks, seen this? There's no text,

just an old photo. It's a group picture, quite formal, the kind of thing you get at the end of a

school year. The caption says, fru portrait. This is a photo of the Army's clandestine force research unit,

Britain's top spies in the troubles.

They're mostly men who are dressed in smart military clothes,

but they've got shaggy hair and moustaches.

There's one woman with a thick 1980s fringe and a floor-length white dress.

Right in the middle, there's a man I've heard a lot about. He has thin, sandy hair,

and his hands are bald into fists resting on his knees. He's staring straight into the

camera. This man is the head of the fru, Colonel Gordon Kerr.

Probably the closest thing to James Bond.

He was obviously a bit of a buccaneer.

Oh my God, he has nothing but trouble.

Wherever he goes, arrogance of the man, too.
