Most of us are still trying to absorb the full horror of what was the worst single episode of the murder of Jews since the Holocaust that took place in Israel last weekend.

The incursion into Israel by Hamas terrorists and the bloodlust on which they embarked resulted in the

deaths of around 1,200 Israelis, that's the latest estimate, many of them, women, children, elderly,

another 150 or so are believed to have been kidnapped and taken across the border into Gaza.

And those numbers, both the deaths and the hostages, include, of course,

a significant number of American citizens and citizens of other countries. Israel has declared

all-out war on Hamas and is carrying out a campaign so far, mostly of air strikes on Hamas targets

in Gaza, which Gaza authorities say has also resulted in the deaths of many civilians.

So what happens next,

as we're only beginning to try to understand the geopolitical implications of these extraordinary events, we're going to try and explore that this week. Will Israel conduct a full-scale

ground invasion, as many people expect, and a reoccupation of Gaza in pursuit of its objective
