Welcome to the penultimate instalment of the Halloween Advent Calendar countdown.

Today's witness is Susan from Somerset, who says,

When I was a little girl, my parents, older brothers and I used to take weekend walks

out on the Blorange Mountain in South Wales. The track wound around and sometimes the way ahead

was hidden. Whilst my brothers were playing, I skipped ahead. I saw a one-story, simple stone cottage

with a chimney smoke coming at the top. In front was an old man chopping firewood.

He wore a waistcoat, a flat grubby hat with a brim and had a long white moustache.

I was a child that liked to talk and wandered up, telling him who I was and all about my family.

He squinted and said, you be a chatty little thing. At that point, something I cannot explain what,

made me somehow uncomfortable, that I shouldn't be there.

I turned and fled back around the corner to my parents.

I told them about the old man, and they looked at each other in puzzlement.

We carried on walking, and when we reached the point where the cottage was,

all that was there was the stone foundations of what was once a small home.
