Hello, I'm James Reynolds on the BBC World Service and this is BBC OS Conversations on Haiti.

With armed gangs in control of large areas of the capital, ordinary Haitians share what it's like to live in an increasingly dangerous nation.

Going out is pretty dangerous because there's kidnapping every day and my child. She's working so she tried to live every day at different hours.

Every day someone is living home in Haiti. You pray for that same person to come back and be safe.

Haiti shares an island in the Caribbean Sea with the Dominican Republic.

But unlike its thriving neighbour, Haiti is the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere.

Within the last 15 years alone, it's had outbreaks of cholera, a devastating earthquake and political upheaval.

Last year, the country's president was assassinated, a crime for which no one has yet been put on trial and since then violence in Haiti has escalated.

According to human rights groups, armed gangs now control at least 60% of the capital port of Prince.

In October alone, the UN says that there were 200 killings and 100 kidnappings.

There's also evidence that these gangs are increasingly using rape as a weapon.

who's been highlighting what's been going on in this troubled nation.

Just in front of me, there's a grey vehicle riddled with bullets.

There are bullets on the ground.

A lot of heavily armed police here, some with their faces covered and with their weapons in their hands, there are about five or six police cars here forming a roadblock.

There's an AK-47 on the ground, some ammunition and some blood.

We're with one of the police officers here now. He says he's been a serving police officer for 27 years.
