Summary

James Clear (he/him) is a writer and speaker focused on habits, decision-making, and continuous improvement, and the author of the international best-selling book, Atomic Habits, which has sold more than 1 million copies worldwide. In this episode, James breaks down the science of habit into practical, actionable steps to help you shift from feeling stuck to doing the thing, whether you’re trying to start something new or break a pattern that isn’t serving you. He’ll explain his two minute habit hack, why “casting votes” is the best way to solidify a new habit, and what friction has to do with behavioral change. We also talk about how to navigate social influence when you’re trying to stick with a new habit, and why systems matter far more than goals. Continue the conversation with me @melissau on Instagram. that kind of reminds me of my own. There's a ton of habit research built into

the whole 30 rules, resources, and support. Everything from choosing the number 30 to our

0:56.0

tagline, I am Whole 30, is grounded in Habit Science, although I didn't actually

1:02.2

plan it that way.

1:03.0

Much of the whole 30 was created before I started studying habit,

1:08.0

willpower, and change.

1:09.0

The original rules, the original support that I wrote,

1:12.0

all of that came from my own experience in recovery from my drug addiction

1:17.0

I learned so many lessons about a growth mindset habit priming and keystone habits during my first few years in recovery

1:24.5

although I had no idea what those things were called. I figured if it worked for me

there they would probably work for my whole 30 years giving up the foods they loved for 30 days in the name of self-experimentation.

1:37.0

It wasn't until a few years later that I started really digging into the psychology of change and habit,

1:43.0

and realizing there are reasons why what I did back then

worked so well.

I've been able to apply much of what I learned
