Summary

For part two of our Gwen Stefani series, NPR Music editor Hazel Cills returns to Pop Pantheon to tackle Gwen's solo career. Louie and Hazel discuss Gwen striking out on her own via collaborations with Moby and Eve, then parse through her certifiably bonkers, extraordinarily controversial, hit-stacked solo debut, 2004’s Love Angel Music Baby – undoubtedly one of the mid 2000’s biggest blockbusters. Then they consider her 2006 follow-up, The Sweet Escape, and solo return a decade later, 2016’s This Is What the Truth Feels Like. Along the way, they dig into Gwen’s gleefully polyglot musical aesthetic, her infamous cultural appropriation and, finally, rank Gwen Stefani in the official Pop Pantheon.

Last week we covered no doubt her band from the late 80s through the present day,

but really their run of canonical hits in the mid-90s through the early 2000s.

And today we're picking up after their fifth studio album, Rock Steady, and into Gwen's

solo career, which peaked in the mid-2000s.

This was such a great episode to tape.

1:38.5

Obviously, Gwen's solo music had a huge impact on me as a music listener, as a high school student who was of prime age to consume

1:46.6

her at the peak of her pop powers. There's so much interesting controversy here. There's a lot of

1:50.3

great music. So I really hope you enjoy Pop Pantheon Gwen Stefani.

If I were to name the top 10 albums that have shaped how I think about pop music,

2:02.9

Gwen Stefani's certifiably bonkers, extraordinarily controversial, and perhaps most importantly,

2:08.1

hit-stacked solo debut, Love Angel Music Baby, would most certainly be on that list.

2:13.6

Looking back on it is like an unhinged time capsule, a gleefully polyglot musical aesthetic that somehow both perfectly enshrines the mid-aughts moment in which it dropped,
