Welcome to The Treatment. I'm Elvis Mitchell. It's always good to have an old friend back to the show.

And our old friend Gus Van Zand is back with a new movie,

his newest film is,

Don't worry, he won't get far on foot.

The film adaptation of the book by the incredible cartoonist John Callahan,

who basically found a way to turn his life into these scabrous cartoons

that it's funny.

I always thought they belonged to The New Yorker,

and there's a scene in the movie where we find out that he tried that, as a matter of fact.

Yeah.

He eventually, I'm assuming he got printed in New Yorker

because he had even a monthly Playboy magazine spot at one point. And his first cartoon was printed

in Penthouse, who, who was like, it was interesting combination of cartoons and like nudity

in both those magazines. But, um, yeah, the Penthouse thing was the his first big score. and he was doing a local newspaper which is the

Portland State school newspaper and I think after that he was starting to do the weekly papers

like well I'm at week but LA weekly village voice voice yeah I know stuff from the voice and from the LA Weekly,

but how did you end up

finding this material?
