Dan just wrote me, it says, Tom, I'm having trouble choosing a caliber for elk hunting.

I looked at 306, 308, and 338 federal.

I've heard good and bad about 306 and 308, but not the 338 federal.

Which of these rounds would be ideal?

And here comes the real kicker.

I really don't want to buy a magnum.

Well, the 338 Magnum, even though it doesn't say so, is in fact a magnum, just so that you know.

It basically duplicates the 338 win mag

cartridge which is one of the great elk cartridges of all time i love the 338 but if you

don't want a magnum you don't have to buy a magnum a 30 out six or a 308 either one is perfectly adequate

and fine and everything you need for elk hunting.

Out to 275, 300 yards, good to go.

I mean, you could do it a lot farther than that, but that's, I think, those reasonable distances.

Pick a good bullet in 165 to 180 green category controlled expansion bullet like a nozzle partition
