caliber for elk hunting I looked at 30-06, 308, and 338 federal. I've heard good and bad about

30-06 and 308, but not the 338 federal. Which of these rounds would be ideal. And here comes the real

kicker. I really don't want to buy a Magnum. Thanks for your help. Well the 338

Magnum even though it doesn't say so is in fact a Magnum just so that you know.

It basically duplicates the 338 win mag cartridge which is one of the great elk

cartridges of all time. I love the 338. But if you don't want a magnum, you don't have to buy a magnum.

A 30-06 or a 308, either one is perfectly adequate and fine and everything you need for

elk hunting.

Out to 275, 300 yards, good to go.

I mean you could do it a lot farther than that but that's I think

goes reasonable distances. Pick a good bullet in 165 to 180 grain category

controlled expansion bullet like a nozzle partition or a Barnes X bullet or any of those,
