Whether it's a round ball or a bullet.

Yeah, let me go over the issue again so people who weren't there will know what we're talking about. Had a caller and said, why does it improve accuracy on a round ball, not a bullet, but a round ball if you shoot it through a rifled barrel.

And basically, when you put a spin on a musket ball, why is it more accurate?

And so we were playing with, you know, stump the science guy, which took people about two seconds to stump me.

So fill in the blanks for me, Jim.

Well, the easiest way is to think of it like spinning a child's toy top,

but with the bullet, the line of flight of the bullet is like the spindle in the center of the top.

And it has to be rolling around the line of flight for the stabilization to work.

If it was rolling end over end along the line of flight, it wouldn't stabilize it.

But if it's spinning perpendicular to the line of flight, it will stabilize for the same

reason the top won't tilt while it's spinning.

Well, I know that's true for a bullet.
