This recording we're about to play for you is from the afternoon of October the 16th, 1970.

Charles Hawes Barrister is making his opening submission to the jury.

He's Peter McGuire.

The historian Dr. Michael Heaney sets this up for us.

Peter McGuire was Hawke's second counsel.

He had two seniors, one Neil McCarthy and the second one Peter McGuire, both senior counsel.

And this was Peter McGuire's version before the jury

of the case that Charles Hawhey would be making in evidence.

He covers all the main points that Hawley would be relying on.

And it presented the jury with an introduction to Hawke's case for his innocence.

box to give evidence in this case, it falls to me to address you as short as I can

on his behalf. And I want to emphasize gentlemen at the outset,

but I do not intend, in the course what I'm going to say to at this stage,

to deal in detail with the case which has been presented here by the prosecution as against Mr. Hawke and the other accused.

Nor do I intend, gentlemen gentlemen to deal in detail

with the evidence which Mr. Hawing will give you

when he goes into the witness box.
