You're listening to episode three of Gunplot.

I'm Ronan Kelly and together with my colleague Nicolene Greer and the RTE documentary

on one team, we are unpicking the stories that make up one of the biggest political

scandals Ireland has ever seen, the arms crisis of 1970.

And don't forget there's a companion television documentary to this podcast, also titled

and it runs from September to early October.

In this period, a few new characters come into the story, and one really significant event,

a meeting in County Cavan that threatened to ground the whole clandestine plan before it even

took off. Remember at the beginning of episode one, we heard about the anonymous note being brought

to the office of the leader of the Irish government, the Taoiseach. The note talked about a plot to bring guns

into Ireland illegally. Well, in this episode, that so-called plot starts to come together.

But by the end of the episode, the secret plan looks like it's coming apart, under threat

of being brought down by other state actors waiting in the wings.

We begin this episode with a bizarre scene at Dublin Airport.

It involves guns being brought into Ireland illegally.
