Summary

This week David and Curtis tackle the tough subject of gun violence. They look at the various tensions between gun rights and gun control and the hyper-polarized responses we are apt to have on one side or the other. They also help us take a step back to think through the "how" of approaching such a complex issue versus just the "what" of our preferred policy outcome.

0:20.0

We want to hear a story about what you are doing along the themes of the GoodFaith podcast, perhaps it's something about how you're living out your relationships with political polarization, how you are trying to reflect the image of God in your institution and organization, or what you're doing with your money or your vocation, anything that has been sparked by the themes that we've covered here in the GoodFaith podcast is fear game.

0:47.0

It doesn't matter if it's a big story, a small story, or something in between, as long as it's a story about what you are doing in your life.

0:55.0

We're not so much interested in hearing just thoughts. We want to hear stories of doing. So, we'll put a link in the show notes where you can just click on it and then supply us the basic outlines of your story of doing of living out the themes of GoodFaith podcast.

1:11.0

And we'll look at it and we may invite you to share that story on a GoodFaith blog, a social media, or perhaps even invite you to come on the GoodFaith show yourself and talk to me and share your story.

1:25.0

Welcome to the GoodFaith podcast. I'm David French with Curtis Chang and we're going to dive into a interesting and touchy and difficult subject today.

2:01.0

We're going to dive into gun violence and gun control and not so much from a standpoint of what is the Christian position on gun violence well against, but or what is the Christian position on gun control.

2:17.0

But more from a standpoint of how do we approach the conversation? What's the, we talk a lot in and we have talked a lot in this podcast that politics has a how component and a what component? How do you approach conversations about the most difficult issues?

2:38.0

What's your, in what way do you communicate about those issues? And then without divorcing them from the what? I mean, politics is about a what? What should the policy be? What should the outcome be even as you're, you're thinking very hard about how should I live within politics and the political world?

2:58.0

You're also thinking very hard about what should be the outcome of the political world? And we talk a lot about Micah 68 in this, this format of act justly, which is not optional.

3:10.0

We're trying to seek a just outcome, but also to other components that are not optional as well, loving kindness and walking humbly.

3:19.0

So Curtis, I can think of few topics better suited to put this framework to the test than our nation's argument about gun violence and gun control.

3:30.0

Yeah, it is about as divisive as anything else. I mean, it is probably replaced, I think at this point, at least in this cultural moment, replaced abortion as the issue that is galvanizing fear and hate on both sides.

3:43.0

Yeah, and tipathy and in the sense of the other side is incomprehensible to your side.

3:51.0

So this is a great test for the how being as necessary as the what of politics.

3:59.0

And I have to just say, I think I'm going to have to major, I'm trying to think about the how because on the what?

4:08.0

You know, it is a complex issue. It's not one that I think I'm a particular expert on.

4:13.0

You know, when we first talked about like wanting to do guns, I was sort of hoping like, can we do like top gun?

4:18.0

Can we talk about that? I'm happy to talk about that.

4:22.0

Yeah, happy to. Well, maybe we'll just pivot here.
