There was a trace of it back in 1991,

when Silence of the Lambs did a major Oscar sweep.

But people back then did everything they could to minimize the

encroachment of horror onto the red carpets, calling it a thriller, not a

horror movie. But you and I, we know better.

There has always been artistry in the nightmare world of horror movies dating back to the

silent days of the cabinet of Dr. Caligari and its macabre brethren.

But now that blood-red creep into the world cinema psyche

is reaching out into the widest audience ever.

With filmmakers specializing in creating unique, inventive, perceptive evocations of our darkest dreams

working at full power, we get the visions of Robert Eggers, Bong Jun Ho, Jennifer Kent, Jordan Peel, and Ariaster, among many others.

Moving out of the art house and into the well now evacuated cinemas.

Maybe it's not long before we are no longer consigned to the gutter.

Okay, I might be dreaming.

But never has there been more artistry on display in the world of horror's cinematic history than there is now.
