Summary

During our recent Ocean Adventure season, we talked about some very awesome and unique creatures and plants that live in the ocean. One thing that any animal lover (or anyone living on earth) needs to learn more about is how to stop plastic pollution. Plastic pollution not only hurts ocean life, but it hurts the whole earth. So I am sharing my podfriend Cool Facts About Animals, a podcast by kids for kids! This is their episode called “How Kids Can Stop Plastic Pollution.” I love how the kids talk to experts about everyday ways we can help!

From their original episode description:

In this episode, we learn about how much plastic is in the ocean, why that’s a problem for animals, how it all got there, and, most importantly, how you can help.

We talked to so many experts to make this episode. Thank you to:

Senator Jeff Merkley

Dr. Jenna Jambeck, University of Georgia

Christopher Joyce, NPR

Rachel Giles, Chelsea Rochman’s lab

Shaye DiPasquale, Terracycle

David Clark, Amcor

We have a lot of show notes on this one:

Want to do a waste audit? Here’s the link to the waste audit Rachel mentioned: https://rochmanlab.com/waste-audit/

Here’s a link to Terracycle’s website, where you can figure out what to collect and recycle: https://www.terracycle.com/en-US/

Hi everyone, this is Chanel. We're in between seasons right now, but that doesn't

0:06.3

mean I won't share something here now and then. During our recent ocean adventure season,

0:12.1

we talked about some very awesome and unique creatures and plants that live in the ocean.

One thing any animal lover or anyone living on Earth needs to learn more about is how

to stop plastic pollution. Plastic pollution not only hurts ocean life, but it hurts the whole

Earth. So I'm sharing an episode from my pod friend, Cool Facts About Animals, a podcast

by kids for kids. This is their episode called How Kids Can Stop Plastic Pollution. I love how

0:49.5

the kids talk to experts about everyday ways that we can help. I know that I

0:55.6

can do better to help reduce plastic pollution. Our family tries to avoid buying too many plastic

1:02.0

things and try not to buy things that we don't need. We recycle and also try to reuse containers

1:09.1

or packaging as much as possible. For me, I reuse plastic food containers or cut up our milk

1:15.7

cartons to use as planters. I was given a beautiful African violet plant and have been using the cut

1:22.8

leaves to plant new ones. And I have about 15 small plants right now and have even given some

1:29.1

away. And instead of buying new plant pots, I just drill holes at the bottom of the plastic

1:34.7

containers that I collect. For example, I have one from an oat milk yogurt and I use the lid

1:40.7

as a base to catch the water. It's perfect. It's a small thing, but it does help keep these

1:48.0

plastics out of our many, many very full landfills and oceans. There are many more ways to prevent

1:56.0

plastic pollution too. How do you reuse? I'm sure the cool facts about animals crew would love
