Hello again, I'm Armin Alney, and this is To the Point from Public Radio International,

a daily look at the issues Americans care about most.

President Bush's

claims of executive power over terrorist suspects have run into more trouble in both civilian

and military courts. A federal judge has warned of disastrous consequences for the Constitution

and the country if civilians are held without charge. Military judges say they don't have the power

to try prisoners held at Guantanamo Bay.

On to the point, Colin Powell wants to close Guantanamo, not tomorrow, but this afternoon.

What's the point of keeping it open? Are the White House and the Pentagon trying to protect

interrogation techniques that may be counterproductive? A reporter's notebook letter on, public opinion and presidential candidates.
