Patten, became involved in the intelligence and counter terrorism shortly after 9/11. 0:00.0	Our government and our citizens recognize the urgency of the task.
0:05.0	To find and stop Al Qaeda before it could shed the blood of more innocent men, women, and children,
0:11.0	be it in America or be it in any other corner of the world.
0:16.0	And, as has been the case throughout its then 54-year history, CIA was looked to for answers,
0:24.7	not only to the questions on the threats we faced, but also to questions about what we were going to do
0:30.8	to stop future attacks. CIA's mission in the wake of the 9-11 attacks would be a multi-dimensional one.
0:39.3	Stopping al-Qaeda would require the CIA to work closely with its intelligence community,
0:44.3	military, homeland security, and law enforcement partners,
0:48.3	as well as with numerous intelligence and security services around the globe.
0:52.3	To be successful, CIA officers knew that they needed speed, agility, courage, resources,
1:01.0	and most important, intelligence.
1:05.1	Their mission was to acquire through human and technical operations and then to analyze with
1:09.8	deep expertise whatever bits and pieces of information
1:13.6	might help fill out the menacing yet incomplete puzzle of al-Qaeda's terrorist plans.
1:19.6	Indeed, there were numerous, credible, and very worrisome reports about a second and third wave of major attacks against the United States.
1:29.3	And while we grieved, while we honored our dead, while we tended to our injured, and while we embarked
1:36.1	on the long process of recovery, we feared more blows from an enemy we couldn't see and an evil we
1:42.6	couldn't fathom. This is the backdrop against
1:47.0	which the agency was directed by President Bush to carry out a program to detain terrorist
