On for this week’s podcast is Australian Journalist Kristin Shorten, and Australian Special Forces Medic veteran Jody Tieche. Shorten produced and published a documentary in conjunction with the Daily Telegraph called Voodoo Medics. This documentary chronicles the experiences of Australian Special Forces medics in Afghanistan in a very vivid and real way. On 24 August 2010, Corporal Kieran of the 6th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment was a member

of a partnered fighting patrol with soldiers of the Afghan National Army's First Kandak Fourth Brigade 205th Hero Corps,

which was engaged by a prolonged numerically superior and coordinated enemy attack for multiple

firing points.

Corporal Kieran, with complete disregard for his own safety, broke cover on multiple occasions to draw intense and

accurate enemy fire to identify enemy locations and direct return fire from Australian

and Afghan fire support elements during one of these occasions when his patrols sustained a casualty,

again on his own initiative and in an act of exceptional courage,

he moved from his position of cover to deliberately draw fire away from the team

who were treating the casualty.

Corporal Kieran remained exposed and under heavy fire
