If you wanted to,

0:04.0

if you wanted to, could you grow all the food that your family needs in the garden?

0:19.7

It's a really good question, and it's one that I tackled in a semi successful and

0:24.0

semi non successful way last year with my apocalypse grow challenge where I was trying

0:28.1

to live off my own food but I also added in fishing, foraging and bartering and

0:32.4

really those pieces to the puzzle really did help.

0:36.4

But that's actually not the focus of today's episode.

0:39.2

Today we're talking about how large of a garden do you need for your family? And of course that's a

0:47.4

complex question, right? It depends on a lot, like how many people are in your

0:51.8

family? How many people in your family like a particular

0:55.7

vegetable, what vegetables they like at all, what happens if you grow too much.

they consume. So you've got adults, teens, then

1:16.4

you've got kids and infants and toddlers, right? And so figure that out and then on a

1:21.0

per person basis you have to figure out what everyone likes to eat.

1:26.0

So hopefully you guys all like to eat the same thing, but if you don't, then you know you'll want to titrate that and grow a little bit less of this and a little bit

1:34.2

less of this and the stuff that you like you grow a lot of. Okay, so on a per person

1:38.9

basis I'm just going to run over a few different types of plants and this might help. So, kale, let's say you really love

1:47.1

kale. Well, kale can grow for quite some time. In fact, you can overwinter it if you're in an area that can do that and you can just grow it again the next year and so it's a consistent cut and come again style harvesting plant.

1:58.3

So you can get quite a bit of kale off of a single plant. But the question is getting it consistently.
