Summary

There’s so many alliums that we treasure. Growing chives in a pot or garden bed is easy enough that they’re one of the first things most kids grow. Their oniony or garlicky flavor is mild enough that you can eat them straight, but they also make a phenomenal topping for your baked potatoes or other foods.

We're going on an allium adventure over the next couple days here on the

0:17.1

podcast and I hope you'll join us. We're talking today about growing chives.

0:21.8

They're a simple allium to grow much simpler than

0:25.2

things like garlic or onions. So let's figure out how to grow them. I mean honestly

0:31.1

it feels like growing grass it feels like

0:35.4

wheat grass it is just that simple and the harvesting method is also quite

0:40.1

simple so let's get into it first of all what, what are they? What do we call chives in the world

0:46.3

of Alliums? The most common chive is Allium Shwainoprasum, which I did not say correctly, but that's okay.

0:55.2

It's widespread, it's found worldwide in the wild.

0:58.4

In fact, it's actually the only species of Allium that's native to both the old world

1:02.4

and the new world. So as a valuable

1:06.0

asset for pollinators, these chives flower and the flowers look quite beautiful.

1:11.2

In fact many people grow allium simply for their flowers, you know, a

1:16.4

decorative ornamental allium. The portion that we want and we care about is basically the stem. It's the part that looks like a small green

1:26.1

onion. The leaves are really long, they're cylindrical, they're hollow, they form in

1:30.1

layers from the basal bulb and you can plant them extremely close together which makes

1:35.3

them look more like a patch rather than a single plant, right? So let's talk about how to plant them.

1:43.2

When to plant, they're a cool season perennial.

1:46.1

So perennial means they're going to come back, but cool season of course means that

1:49.9

maybe not the best idea to throw them in the garden right now in the middle of the summer.

1:55.2

They'll go dormant in the summer.

1:57.0

So they'll still be there.
